【STORY】
Tatami is a unique traditional culture in Japan that is said to have originated approximately 1300 years ago.
Used for Japanese style rooms in traditional Japanese inns, as sports mats in judo, and for creating spaces in tea ceremonies, flower arranging (Ikebana), and religious temples, tatami has been utilized in various situations in Japan. In the past, tatami was considered a luxury item, accessible only to the Emperor and high-ranking nobility. However, it gradually spread among the common people from the Edo period(1603-1838), and modern tatami culture took root.
With its excellent moisture absorption and insulation properties, tatami has been highly valued in Japan's four-season climate, providing coolness in summer and warmth in winter. Additionally, the raw material of tatami, igusa (rush grass), has a unique fragrance and offers a soothing effect similar to forest bathing.
Despite its historical significance, the demand for traditional Japanese rooms with tatami has decreased in modern times due to the prevalence of flooring and the mechanization of tatami production. As a result, both tatami and tatami craftsmen are in decline.
However, in Tokyo's Asakusabashi district, there is a long-established tatami shop called Kanai Tatami Store that continues to embody the charm of tatami and explore its potential. The store values the traditional hand-sewn technique passed down through generations while proposing new tatami designs that align with the changing times.
In this program, you will have the opportunity to experience a tatami craftsman's production demonstration and create a mini tatami at the Kanai Tatami Store. Touch upon the charm and traditions of tatami, a beloved aspect of Japanese culture for over a millennium, and learn about the dedication and skills of the craftsmen who continue to preserve it.
