【STORY】
Carrying Yoshiwara’s Culture Forward
Born on the northern edge of Edo, Yoshiwara developed over centuries into far more than a district of entertainment. It became a place where people, arts, fashion, food and publishing intersected, creating cultural expressions and trends that reached beyond its gates.
Yet behind its celebrated elegance was another reality—the difficult lives of many of the women who lived and worked here. Understanding Yoshiwara means acknowledging both sides of its history: its creativity and refinement, as well as its complexity and shadows.
As times changed, Yoshiwara’s former geisha district eventually disappeared. But not everything created and practiced here was lost. Distinctive arts including Nichō-tsuzumi and Yoshiwara Sawagi have continued to be passed from teacher to student, person to person, with a younger generation now training to carry them forward.
Our aim is not to recreate the Yoshiwara of the past. It is to rediscover the cultural legacy rooted in this place, support the people who continue to practice it today, and create new opportunities for these traditions to be shared with future generations.
This experience is part of that journey. By watching the arts, meeting their practitioners and joining a small lesson yourself, you are not simply observing a tradition. Your participation creates an opportunity for the next generation to practice, share and pass these arts forward.
From the Yoshiwara of history to the Yoshiwara being carried forward today.
We invite you to discover not only the culture of this remarkable place, but also the people shaping its next chapter.
